updated December 17 2009

"Ritual" is a series of stand-alone stories slashing brothers Nathan and Peter Petrelli. Their characters are largely based on show canon, but there's a whole lot of backstory that I made up which has been contradicted by subsequent episodes. With the advent of Season 3, this has been severely Jossed (i.e. I speculated on things I didn't know, which were later canonically established as something different), and now can only be considered as having been "inspired" by the show, but canonically incorrect in dozens of ways. As they say, "Oops."

Only the events described in stories I have written will be seen here. (There are a couple of serious breaches of internal continuity; I apologize. In the interests of living with my mistakes, these will not be corrected - see if you can spot them!) Events in italics are either part of the internal structure of a story largely set at another time, or are important milestones in their lives.

Ritual (58): Possession

Ritual (60): Connection
2007, fall: Nathan, having escaped from the Sullivan Brothers carnival, goes to Peter's apartment in search of the comfort of what he knows and loves best. Peter needs the connection, too, even if he has no real idea or understanding about the true nature of the Nathan standing in front of him.

Nathan and Peter have a loving, but consuming and obsessive relationship, full of strange patterns, codes, talismans, games, and roleplay. They are each other's exclusive outlet for the edges of their sexuality, thanks to their near-infinite trust in each other. They idolize, despise, and genuinely like each other; they are far more similar than either one thinks. The roles of the dominant and the submissive shift depending on their individual needs - Nathan usually takes an authoritative role in bed, but it is usually Peter who initiates the experiences, and who affects the most profound emotional breakthroughs.

Each time they acknowledge their mutual attraction, and the times that they act on it, reinforces their bond and also edges them further away from "ordinary" society. Their attraction to each other has a lot to do with their special abilities - Peter's ability in particular connects him to Nathan, but Nathan is also innately strongly attracted to others with abilities, whether he knows it (or it has manifested) or not. Years of repeated sexual contact and discussion have made them uniquely suited for each other - they have extraordinary knowledge about each other's bodies, preferences, and tendencies. Both carry on regular sexual activity with, and attraction to the opposite sex, but deliberately restrict male/male sexuality to each other. If not for each other, it should be assumed that they would satisfy their appetites for male/male sex with other people (in Nathan's case, most likely in secret, and with undoubtedly disastrous consequences). In this somewhat chauvanistic manner, they "keep each other out of trouble."

They hurt each other constantly, often deliberately, but they also love each other more than anything else in the world, and their times spent together are often blissful. Still, the bond is fragile... and now EVERYTHING is different...

"But in the end, all that matters is love." - Charles Deveaux

Ahhh. My inner geek is just basking. I love fanfic, I love time lines, I love meta and analysis. A time line and analysis of my all time favorite Heroes fic?
I'm very interested in this

Nathan is also innately strongly attracted to others with abilities

I love this idea. Any chance on you expanding on it?
I'm looking forward like whoa to this series continuing. It's just such an awesome interpretation, and so far, pretty canon-compatible.

my all time favorite Heroes fic?
Aw shucks! *blush*

depending on what happens in the future, yeah, I might expand on Nathan's attraction to other powered folks... I dunno, though. And yeah, it's canon-aligned, which is why I haven't gone into the future much at all - I want to see what canon tells me. It's so much fun for me to follow that path, even though sometimes it's a challenge making it work. But not really. If you know much about secret relationships (and fortunately or unfortunately, I do) it's really, really easy to make a relationship between Nathan and Peter possible. People usually really only see what they want to see. (Sounds like something Claude would say, huh?)

Oh dear. What does it say about me that I really like the idea that Ritual 10 took place on my birthday?

I'm enjoying this series. I think you capture some interesting dynamics between the two of them even on the rare occasions that I disagree with the individual characterizations (and that's rare, btw). You always get the brothers right.

I have been resisting placing stories on my own birthday, so it's all good. Glad to be of service! ^_^

Sometimes I'm not sure about the individual characterizations myself - and please, if you see something that doesn't ring true to you, call it out. I trust that you won't do the "YOU GOT THIS WRONG YOU SUCK YOU UGLY BITCH" style of "constructive criticism", and there's only going to be a few more stories, but I am always, always open to pointers. And if you respond fast enough I will sometimes go back and revise it after it's been posted!

Soooo.... as the writer of this series, do you think I should follow the original order of the stories, or do it chronologically? I'm curious, cuz I started reading these a bit, loved them, then had stuff come up but I want to start back with the beginning... Whatever the beginning may be.
Lol, I know I'm a nerd, but I want to read it RIGHT, haha.
Loved what I've read so far, look forward to reading up on it more!

Much like with my pro novel series (also written out of "chronological" sequence) I recommend doing both, if you've got the time. Otherwise it depends on you - if you want a linear progression, read chronologically; if you want to see me progress as a writer, read them in numbered order.

I warn you - there are some inconsistencies, some of which are deliberate (Nathan is a very, very difficult person who constantly does and says one thing one day, then suddenly switches the next - not my doing, but Kring's) and some of which are just me screwing up and not being as familiar with my own material as I should be. Overall I did a pretty good job of remembering what happened when, but sometimes I messed up, especially in the stories written before I had my own timeline established (and which I refer to heavily, especially because I outlined potential future stories so I'd always have a germ of a story idea when I need one, like right now). The reason why I don't have the timeline as publicly viewable is because I've had to revise it because I wrote things that weren't originally on there, or changed things from how I'd originally thought they'd go.

I love your reader's guides. They refresh my memory/catalogue what my brain can't wrap itself around (timelines make me rip out my hair).

About the Ritual series

Ok, let me start out by saying that I've never commented on a fic before. At least not a Nathan/Peter one, but I think this one definitely needs some comment.
I'm brazilian and therefore have some problems with English, being that it's not my birth language and I kind of learn something new everyday on your fics. What I don't know, I can easily imangine..hehehhe.
I watched season 1 of Heroes only last month and immediately fell in love with the boys. I think your characterization of them is pretty accurate, if not a little over the top, especially regarding Peter's sensitivity. But it works perfectly with your story, and all the secret relantionship, and the fact that he can't be as honest as he would like to be. Nathan is just a total control freak in the show, and you make it sip into his sex life extremelly well. The way he deals with his own feelings regarding Peter are very real too. Guilt, confusion, protectiviness, this guy must be one big bundle of emotions, and since he's the repressed one, must be very hard for him to just let go of all that and just love his brother the way he deserves.
Ok, so I know about how secret relantionships work, and I'm definitely the stuck up one so I can usually relate to Nathan. I know where he's coming from (not the incest part, mind you...ahuahuahuah) and I know we "stuck up" people need someone like Peter around. To slap us in the face sometimes and make us pour our hearts out.
Well, loved your fic. My boss didn't like it so much as I haven't been getting any work done lately...ahauhuahauh...but keep them coming.

Re: About the Ritual series

Thank you so much for your comment - it means a lot to me! I'm glad that Heroes is being so well received everywhere - it's a very universal story, and it definitely stimulates the imagination. I hope you'll continue to enjoy the stories, because I am going to continue writing them!
ozwich From: ozwich Date: January 12th, 2008 11:29 am (UTC) (Link)
Well, I'm addicted to Ritual. Each story gives me a new insight and reminds me why I love this pair so much.
And god you can write sex. Totally. I'm so jealous.

I love your take on the relationship - often it seems that Nathan has the upper hand, but it's Peter who's really pulling the strings. Nathan just needs to be reminded every now and then, in interesting ways of course.
mystery_sock From: mystery_sock Date: January 13th, 2008 01:16 am (UTC) (Link)
Hee! I'm glad you like it - and it's been fun establishing that relationship, and elaborating on it. (and yeah, writing sex scenes is what I love to do, so I have lots and lots of practice...)

I'm really enjoying the Ritual series and I was wondering if it would be alright if I friend you, being that we're both Heroes fan and I like to write as well. :D

Absolutely you can friend me - I'm glad for it!

Dear mystery_sock,

This is a very belated comment, which I realize you may not read, but I feel strongly enough about your work that I just need to express it. I simply wanted to let you know that I am a devoted (previously lurking) fan of the ritual series. The depth and scope of emotion in these stories is unlike anything else I have read, and the writing itself is beautiful, lyrical and moving. My superficial, girlie side also wants to say that, your Peter characterization is exactly how I see him: intelligent, artless, endearing, and of course, unbelievably hot! Nathan is also absolutely pitch-perfect.
I am catching up on fiction, after a several week absence, hence the tardiness of this comment. I have noticed your last ritual update was some time ago, and while I miss it, I don't begrudge you the break! Given the amount of heart and soul evident in every word, phrase and paragraph of each ritual story, I don't know how you have the energy to write as much as you have. I guess I can't ever really know just how much effort you must have put into creating this, but, regardless, I am extremely grateful.
And now, my long, rambling (and yes, I'm aware, perhaps irritatingly gushing) comment is complete.
I wish you the best in all your future endeavors...I hope that writing is your chosen profession? If not - it should be.
mystery_sock From: mystery_sock Date: March 17th, 2008 05:47 pm (UTC) (Link)
Of COURSE I read - and I reply to almost every single comment I get! I live on 'em in fact!

And yes, writing is my chosen profession - it's not what I do for a living, because I haven't been that lucky so far, but I am still hoping that someday I can just write fiction most of the time. (I think I'd probably always have a part-time job, at least - it gets me out of the house and forces me to interact with other humans, which is good for my sanity).

Thank you so much for the compliments - it is good to see my work has been appreciated. Ritual has really been my heart and soul for the last year. I am really pleased that you enjoyed it, and that you took the time to comment. (And there's MORE TO COME!)

OH MY GOD (And I mean that in the best way possible)

O____O A Petrellicest that starts from Peter's birth and onwards, and I thought Trekker was the only one. O_O OMG I LOVE YOU MARRY ME NOW, lol. <3333333333333333333333333333333333333333

*now remembers why she has always loved Petrellicest, though she never actually forgot* <3

Do you plan to keep going on with Ritual through Season 3 after Season 3 is over? I would love to read that too. <33333333333333333333333

*is enveloped in teh Petrellicest and couldn't be happier XP*

Re: OH MY GOD (And I mean that in the best way possible)

Actually, Trek's work inspired me to expand the story outward a lot... she's one of my favorite writers, so I'm glad to be included in her company.

I will continue Ritual for as long as I have ideas for it (and room to put it in); hopefully Season 3 will give me some nice juicy canon to munch on, and some more backstory that hopefully doesn't contradict what I've done!

I'm glad my unwholesome obsession brings you joy. It's just so fun to do.

im finally done!

I'm on Ritual (6): A&T&FYSS
( i cheated.. I started reading before I was done converting all the chapters :[ )
and I love it, I really do.
you do great work capturing the two. I really love their relationship toward each other and how they're both so headstrong at some times. And there's drama and humor and fluff :3

so many pretty awards! and you deserve each and every one of them.... and MORE!

Until now I only catched a glimpse but it's so amazing, I will read it all as soon as possible.

Would you mind if I add you as a friend? I don't want to miss any updates. *gg*

Take care! ;)

I'm a little late to the Heroes thing, having only started watching it two months ago, not to mention the Petrelli love. I noticed your recent post and I read your timeline to see what "Ritual" was all about, and I must say I have a lot of reading to do. I'd like to say that the comment you left me on "Indestructible" means even more to me now that I have an inkling of the magnitude of what you've written. If you could possibly take the time to read my few other Nathan/Peter fics I would be indebted to you forever. Thanks again.

Thank you! I appreciate that a lot - I love these stories so much, and I have no intention of stopping, even though I've had to slow down quite a bit. Still... it's always worth it.

I have read most of the Ritual stories and I love them. There's no way I'd ever be able to name a favorite. They're also a great resource for a new Petrellicest fan. You have great characterization in all of them and, of course, wonderful sex scenes. :) The only complaint I have is that I would like to see more stories that take place during the series.

Also--on my lj I like to do a daily rec of the day with a link. Do you mind me having the link go directly to the story (or stories) here?

I hope you write more soon!

I'd like that too - but the way I have Ritual set up, it's very hard to make that work. In Season 1, they are either very separate, or Nathan is very busy; in Season 2, I did as much as I possibly could. In Season 3, everything's so jumbled up with Present Peter and Future Peter both having contact with Nathan, Nathan being hospitalized, Nathan taking the Senate seat, etc. that I haven't been able to get my bearings on what that would mean for the Ritual relationship - not to mention the fact that I have something like four hours a month where I can work on it right now (instead of hundreds of hours, like in the years past!). In-show fics take a LOT of studying - and I want the stories to be as plausible, and mesh as seamlessly with the show's canon, as possible. If I didn't care, it'd be easier - but I do, so there it is!

Nope, be my guest - and do link to the Reader's Guide if you like, or to the "ritual" tag... and don't forget to check the "fic" tag, because I've written tons of Heroes NC-17 stuff that isn't Ritual, and it's easy to forget that!

Me too, me too... I was so inspired by the possibilities (and by so many great fic writers - I mean, shit, read fabrisse! And 47_trek_47... even though as far as I know, both of them are off the show now... *sigh*)

Thank you for reading and commenting. It makes me happier than anything!

I just noticed something. I read Ritual (51) for the second time and then went to the guide to see where exactly it's placed in chronological order. It's not there. I thought you might want to know. Off to read more Ritual...

I did NOT know that - thank you so much for letting me know. I appreciate it!

The oversight has now been corrected.

There was something I wanted to mention.

My two friends were a big part of why I got into slash. I just *had* to know what the big deal was about it. It's kind of funny that I chose Peter/Nathan to be my first (and only) experience with slash because not only is it slash, it's incest too.

Anyway, I have raved to them about how amazingly hot Peter and Nathan are together and we decided I'd send them some so they could read it. I sent them a fanvid so they could see the looks between the two first...

And I sent them a link to Ritual because I see it as the best Peter/Nathan I have read and wanted them to have the best for their first time. I'm hoping I can make them a fan of the pairing too (even though they don't watch Heroes)

I just wanted to tell you that
mystery_sock From: mystery_sock Date: March 22nd, 2009 09:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
I wish I could make fanvids, but I want to actually direct Milo and Adrian in them... as hot as the looks and hugs and kisses and gropings on the show have been, I want there to be SO MUCH MORE.

I'm a slash fan from way back, but I tend to have only ONE pairing at a time that I write about - and Peter and Nathan have been the most inspirational OTP of my entire life. (Obviously! Hee... I don't think I've ever written anything this long about anything.)

I hope your friends like Ritual! It's my pride and joy!

I've been lurking around this ridiculously amazing fic for a while now, but now that I've finally got an LJ, I just wanted to say that you're made of 100% awesome. That is all :D

Do you mind if I friend you?

I really love Not Without You--especially the implied future you mention in it. I was curious...would you ever consider continuing it into an AU Heroes story/series? I would love to see that...
mystery_sock From: mystery_sock Date: February 17th, 2010 06:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
I have considered it, yeah, sure, but right now there really isn't the time to do it justice. Left to my own devices, I would write Petrellicest all day, every day, and do all the stories I (and everyone else) would ever like to see. But there just isn't TIME. I'm sad about how little Ritual fic I've managed to do in the last six months; I have more stories planned and hoped-for, but I barely have time and concentration to get any writing done at all, and I'm mostly concentrating on the novel I'm writing that is directly influenced by this series.

I hope I can interest some of y'all in it, once I have something to show. :)

Thank you!

I'm not even sure if you'll get this message seeing as I'm about... Um... 5 years late? But I just want to say this in the hopes you'll see it - I love you for writing this. Ritual is perfect. Right after I watched season 1 I had to find some Petrellicest, and somehow I made my way here and I'm so glad I did. It's even gotten to the point where when I discuss Heroes with my friend, I have to stop and think about whether what I'm about to say actually happened, or if I read it in Ritual, because this just became canon for me. You wrote them both so well and kept so true to their characters and I adore every fic, wholeheartedly. I've got about 6 more to read, and I almost don't want to because I don't want it to end. Although I'm sure at some point soon I'll be back to read them all over again.
So, yes, once again, thank you for all this wonderful deliciousness. I really don't know what else to say except that. Thank you!

And I thank you.
