"An open-ended Petrellicest exercise in sheer depravity..."

All the Ritual stories in chronological order. Titles, links, and brief summaries (with ratings), plus a quick overview of this whole "Ritual" relationship - it's everything for the lightly confused, but still interested! Warning: Spoilers for all aired episodes.
updated 7/15/08

"Ritual" is a series of stand-alone stories slashing brothers Nathan and Peter Petrelli. Their characters are largely based on show canon, but there's a whole lot of backstory that I made up which has been contradicted by subsequent episodes. There is much, much more in the timeline I drew up as a guide for myself, but only the events described in stories I have written will be seen here. (There are a couple of serious breaches of internal continuity; I apologize. In the interests of living with my mistakes, these will not be corrected - see if you can spot them!) Events in italics are either part of the internal structure of a story largely set at another time, or are important milestones in their lives.

ON PETER AND NATHAN in RITUAL
Nathan and Peter have a loving, but consuming and obsessive relationship, full of strange patterns, codes, talismans, games, and roleplay. They are each other's exclusive outlet for the edges of their sexuality, thanks to their near-infinite trust in each other. They idolize, despise, and genuinely like each other; they are far more similar than either one thinks. The roles of the dominant and the submissive shift depending on their individual needs - Nathan usually takes an authoritative role in bed, but it is usually Peter who initiates the experiences, and who affects the most profound emotional breakthroughs.

Each time they acknowledge their mutual attraction, and the times that they act on it, reinforces their bond and also edges them further away from "ordinary" society. Their attraction to each other has a lot to do with their special abilities - Peter's ability in particular connects him to Nathan, but Nathan is also innately strongly attracted to others with abilities, whether he knows it (or it has manifested) or not. Years of repeated sexual contact and discussion have made them uniquely suited for each other - they have extraordinary knowledge about each other's bodies, preferences, and tendencies. Both carry on regular sexual activity with, and attraction to the opposite sex, but deliberately restrict male/male sexuality to each other. If not for each other, it should be assumed that they would satisfy their appetites for male/male sex with other people (in Nathan's case, most likely in secret, and with undoubtedly disastrous consequences). In this somewhat chauvanistic manner, they "keep each other out of trouble."

They hurt each other constantly, often deliberately, but they also love each other more than anything else in the world, and their times spent together are often blissful. Still, the bond is fragile, wrapped in a secret that will be difficult to maintain, especially with the intense scrutiny brought about by Nathan's political career, and the growing risk to both of their lives as their status as genetic anomalies becomes more widely known. Let's see what the future holds for the brothers Petrelli...

...and please forgive my inconsistencies and paradoxes! I'm only mundane after all. ^_^

Ahhh. My inner geek is just basking. I love fanfic, I love time lines, I love meta and analysis. A time line and analysis of my all time favorite Heroes fic?
Bliss!
I'm very interested in this

Nathan is also innately strongly attracted to others with abilities

I love this idea. Any chance on you expanding on it?
I'm looking forward like whoa to this series continuing. It's just such an awesome interpretation, and so far, pretty canon-compatible.

my all time favorite Heroes fic?
Aw shucks! *blush*

depending on what happens in the future, yeah, I might expand on Nathan's attraction to other powered folks... I dunno, though. And yeah, it's canon-aligned, which is why I haven't gone into the future much at all - I want to see what canon tells me. It's so much fun for me to follow that path, even though sometimes it's a challenge making it work. But not really. If you know much about secret relationships (and fortunately or unfortunately, I do) it's really, really easy to make a relationship between Nathan and Peter possible. People usually really only see what they want to see. (Sounds like something Claude would say, huh?)

Oh, and thanks for friending me back.

Thank you for friending me! Glad you like it! It's... well, you're looking at the last ten months of my life right here. ^_^

You're welcome! And you know, I never thought I would like it. I was following links from one journal to the next, started reading your stuff, and went, "That's so them that it's now canon in my mind!"
Ten months? Jeeze! That's some dedication right there. Where do you find the time?
mystery_sock From: [info]mystery_sock Date: September 22nd, 2007 07:13 am (UTC) (Link)
Where do you find the time?
Not doing a whole lot else, and being a very fast writer in general.

I am glad you like it - it's a pleasure to know I've entertained someone who might not have been interested before. And yeah, it feels like canon to me, but I have to keep reminding myself that it's not. (But there's nothing in my fics that says that it can't be!...)

That's cool. I'm in college right now. I have to write at least one ten-page essay a week for art history/history/lit, so I just assume everyone else is bogged down by assignments.

LOL, even if the show totally destroys it as canon, there's the wonderful world of AU! But I say nay, it shall always be canon, damnit!

Oh dear. What does it say about me that I really like the idea that Ritual 10 took place on my birthday?

I'm enjoying this series. I think you capture some interesting dynamics between the two of them even on the rare occasions that I disagree with the individual characterizations (and that's rare, btw). You always get the brothers right.
mystery_sock From: [info]mystery_sock Date: October 1st, 2007 08:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
I have been resisting placing stories on my own birthday, so it's all good. Glad to be of service! ^_^

Sometimes I'm not sure about the individual characterizations myself - and please, if you see something that doesn't ring true to you, call it out. I trust that you won't do the "YOU GOT THIS WRONG YOU SUCK YOU UGLY BITCH" style of "constructive criticism", and there's only going to be a few more stories, but I am always, always open to pointers. And if you respond fast enough I will sometimes go back and revise it after it's been posted!

Soooo.... as the writer of this series, do you think I should follow the original order of the stories, or do it chronologically? I'm curious, cuz I started reading these a bit, loved them, then had stuff come up but I want to start back with the beginning... Whatever the beginning may be.
Lol, I know I'm a nerd, but I want to read it RIGHT, haha.
Loved what I've read so far, look forward to reading up on it more!
mystery_sock From: [info]mystery_sock Date: October 3rd, 2007 09:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
Much like with my pro novel series (also written out of "chronological" sequence) I recommend doing both, if you've got the time. Otherwise it depends on you - if you want a linear progression, read chronologically; if you want to see me progress as a writer, read them in numbered order.

I warn you - there are some inconsistencies, some of which are deliberate (Nathan is a very, very difficult person who constantly does and says one thing one day, then suddenly switches the next - not my doing, but Kring's) and some of which are just me screwing up and not being as familiar with my own material as I should be. Overall I did a pretty good job of remembering what happened when, but sometimes I messed up, especially in the stories written before I had my own timeline established (and which I refer to heavily, especially because I outlined potential future stories so I'd always have a germ of a story idea when I need one, like right now). The reason why I don't have the timeline as publicly viewable is because I've had to revise it because I wrote things that weren't originally on there, or changed things from how I'd originally thought they'd go.
